What is Soil?
Soil is a thin layer of the Earth's surface that is made up of minerals and organic matter. It is formed from parent material, or rock that is slowly broken down into smaller and smaller pieces by biological, chemical and physical weathering. It may take thousands of years for rocks to disintegrate into smaller and smaller pieces. It takes between 200 and 1000 years to create only one inch of topsoil!
